Sigma Phi Epsilon to Host First Annual Election for Cancer Research

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – February 3, 2010 – The chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon (SigEp) at the University of Pittsburgh will be conducting its first annual Election for Cancer Research. The event will raise money for the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI).

Various organizations across campus will run candidates to compete in the election, which will raise money by charging one dollar per vote. The three organizations with the most votes will receive percentages of the total money collected, with all other proceeds going to UPCI. The top organization will receive 15%, second place will get 10% and third place will earn 5%.

Voters can cast as many votes as they like for their organizations. There is no charge for an organization to run a candidate. Voting will occur February 15 to March 5 in Litchfield Towers Lobby on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and the William Pitt Union on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Voting tables will be open from 11 A.M. to 2 P.M. each of those days.

Vote totals for each organization will be posted at the beginning of each week, and the winners will be contacted after the election is over and invited to an award ceremony later in the semester. Similar events are held by SigEp chapters at other campuses, including Lehigh University where a SigEp chapter raised over $15,000.

Sigma Phi Epsilon is the largest national collegiate fraternity with 14,000 undergraduates on 260 campuses nationwide. The Pitt chapter has been active for twenty years and is located on upper campus in Fraternity House 7 across from Panther Hall.
